How is lasik performed?

Lasik or Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis is done by inducing a mild sedative to the patient. The patient is not unconscious during surgery and is awake as the process is carried out.

Lasik surgery is a two-way process. In the first step, the eye is held in its place with the help of a corneal suction ring. With the eye in an immobilized state, the flap is created using a mechanical microkeratome or a femtosecond laser microkeratome. This flap is nothing but a series of bubbles inside the cornea. At one end of this flap, a hinge is created to reveal the middle section of the cornea called the stroma.

This stroma is now shaped with an excimer laser. This laser will vaporizes tissue in a neatly controlled manner, thereby removing many tissue layers, without any cutting or burning. It is this process, which enables the patient to recovery from the problem quickly and at the same time experience less pain during the recovery period.
